In general, from a petroleum waste/global warming perspective...  
is it better to burn gas to drive to the store to buy merchandise, or to order merchandise delivered to your home?

it depends...
it depends totally on the merchandise.
if the good is local, order it. that way you save it from being sent to a store (buring gas) where you would then go to buy it (burning gas) to bring it home (just a few more extra miles). ordering it, in this case, actually saves a short trip.
If it isn't local, you're probably looking for goods from a national company which ships to many locations. in that case, why make the factory fill a whole other specialized shipment for you from far away instead of going to a local store to carry the goods the extra few miles? ordering, in this case, adds a long trip. pick it up.
ps. buy what you can local and in bulk- saves you money, saves you trips/gas, cuts down on waste. (i.e one serving yogurt is the devil!)
