We love to garden -- for the freshness, the smell, the sweat, the taste, the self-sufficiency -- and we're starting, again, small. The land here, and sub-development regulations, don't lend themselves to much more -- and the available space is either steep, shaded, poor soil, or heavily treed. We can build up to bigger things -- raised beds, perhaps, or a solarium; for now, it's pots on the deck, and we're VERY happy.
  • Two kinds of tomato (one plant each)
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Parsley (from seed)
  • Thyme

We also got two roses for out front.

Scraps of wood needing cleaning up out back.

Hammer, nails, a bit of imagination, and a certain indifference to high style.

The finished foundation. At this writing, already covered with some earth, a week's worth of kitchen leavings, some torn cardboard scraps, green yard waste, and last fall's dead leaves.

Like the rest -- cutting down on packaged goods, household waste, increasing and improving our recycling efforts, making aggressive and deliberate choices about our carbon footprint, etc. -- it's a small start which may not show tangible rewards for some time. But we have dirt under our nails and a plan and we're happy to be headed in the right direction.
